Not-very-frequently Asked Questions

  1. 1. Do you have a brochure?

Yes - it’s not as extensive as the website but we’re happy to send you a copy. Phone or email your address. Or click the green brochure cover from the home page of this website to download it.

  1. 2. How much does a fender seat cost?

Have a look at the price list and measuring chart. Take the price of the metalwork from the top grid (e.g. Brushed steel in formed base £956; Satin black steel in standard base £716). Add on the price of any extras (e.g. collars £80; Deep buttoned upholstery £80). Deduct £40 if you want the seats upholstered in your own fabric. Add on any extra for the width over 60”. Add on the delivery charge, which is usually £50 for England, £70 for Scotland or Wales. Add on vat. If you're ordering without a visit from us, you can deduct ten per cent from the bottom line.

  1. 3. How long is delivery?

Your fender seat will be delivered about six weeks after confirmation of your order is received.

  1. 4. It’s Christmas Eve... if I order now, can I have my fender in the morning?

No. You will need to confirm your order by the end of November to guarantee Christmas delivery. It’s our busiest time and there is a finite number of fender seats our workshop can produce, what with their Christmas shopping to do as well.

  1. 5. My mantle supports are wider than my hearth... where should the fender sit?

If we build the base of the fender to fit your hearth, the seats will butt up to the mantle supports. If it’s only a matter of a couple of inches, we can cut out the corner of the seat so it butts half onto the mantle, and half onto the wall. Alternatively, if you have the space, we could use the width of your mantle supports (the “C” measurement on the chart) to determine the length of the fender’s base (the “A” measurement). This would leave a gap at floor level between the fender’s base and the hearth.

Have a look at the measuring help page.

  1. 6. My hearth is wider than my mantle supports... where should the fender sit?

Your choice is limited! The fender’s base ought to sit snuggly around your hearth. If the difference is more than eight inches (four inches each side), there will be a gap between the seats and the mantle supports.

Have a look at the measuring help page.

  1. 7. My hearth is exactly the same size as my mantle supports... where should the fender sit?

We could build the fender so the seats butt up to the wall on the outside of the mantle supports. This would leave a three inch gap at floor level between the fender’s base and the hearth. If your hearth is straight, we could use an infill plate to cover the exposed floor. The alternative is to build the base to fit the hearth, and to cut out the corner of the seat so they butt half onto the mantle supports, half onto the wall.

Have a look at the measuring help page.

  1. 8. I’m not sure about my measurements and I need help.

No problem, we’re happy to come and visit to measure-up your fireplace and show you samples of the metal and wood bases. This would eliminate any doubts you have. More details here.

  1. 9. I want to see samples of the metalwork before I buy.

No problem, we’re happy to come and visit to measure-up your fireplace and show you samples of the metal and wood bases. This would eliminate any doubts you have.

  1. 10. Norfolk Fender Seats will come and visit? But I live miles from Norfolk!

That’s no problem, although I’ll try to get several visits for the same area. Phone or email if you want to be included on the next trip to your area.

  1. 11. Does the brass need polishing?

The brass is left unlacquered to let it dull down over time, so yes, it may need polishing. You can choose to have the brass lacquered to preserve its newness and keep it from tarnishing, so minimal elbow grease is required. This adds a gloss to the brass.

12. Do you have a showroom?

No - it’s more helpful to you if the showroom comes to you! See question nine, above.
